Switzerland advances to World Cup quarter-finals after 72 years after beating Colombia in tiebreaker

Sports Desk:

Switzerland has advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals after a long 72 years. On Tuesday (July 7, 2026), the Swiss defeated Colombia 4-3 in a tiebreaker after the regular and extra-time matches in the last 16 match ended in a goalless draw.

Switzerland’s opponent in the quarter-finals is the reigning world champion Argentina. This match was also the last match of the 2026 World Cup held outside the United States.

Both teams were very cautious from the start in the last 16 match. Despite attacks and counterattacks, neither team scored a goal in the scheduled 90 minutes. When the attacking players failed to break the opponent’s defense even in the extra 30 minutes, the match went to a tiebreaker.

Both teams missed a spot-kick each in the nerve-wracking tiebreaker. However, Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel showed great skill at a crucial moment. He blocked a shot from Colombia’s Cucho Hernandez to give his team the lead.

In the end, Ruben Vargas scored from his own goal to secure the victory for Switzerland. With this 4-3 victory, the Swiss advanced to the last eight of the World Cup for the first time since 1954.
