An event was organized on Thursday (18 June, 2026) evening by the Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka to mark the commencement of the new season of cross-border electricity supply from Nepal to Bangladesh, highlighting the growing momentum of regional energy cooperation between the two countries.
The programme focused on the significance of cross-border electricity trade and the expanding prospects of long-term energy collaboration, particularly in the context of rising energy demand in Bangladesh and Nepal’s vast hydropower potential.
In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Ghanashyam Bhandari underscored the multifaceted relationship between Nepal and Bangladesh. He noted that the commencement of power flow represents not only an economic milestone but also a shared commitment to a greener and more sustainable energy future. He emphasized that the complementarities between Bangladesh’s growing energy needs and Nepal’s renewable hydropower resources make the partnership both natural and mutually beneficial.
In a video message, Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha recalled the historic initiation of power flow in 2024 and expressed confidence that bilateral energy cooperation would continue to expand in the coming years. He called for stronger collective efforts to build a robust and long-term regional energy partnership.
Speaking at the event, Member of Parliament Abdul Moyeen Khan expressed satisfaction over the continuation of cross-border power exchange this year. He stated that Bangladesh looks forward to expanding cooperation with Nepal in the energy sector and envisioned a broader regional framework for coordinated energy security and uninterrupted power trade.
Additional Secretary of the Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh KM Ali Reza highlighted that the initiative symbolizes strengthening bilateral ties and demonstrates the significant potential of regional cooperation in the energy sector. He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to working closely with Nepal and other regional partners to advance shared energy goals.
The event brought together senior policymakers, government officials, business leaders, and representatives from the media and energy sector, reflecting growing interest in sustainable cross-border energy connectivity in South Asia.
