Plans to form a parliamentary caucus in parliament to protect children’s rights: Deputy Speaker

On Thursday (May 7, 2026), a delegation led by UNICEF Social Policy Manager Hasina Begum paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP, at his office in the Parliament Building.

During the meeting, the Deputy Speaker said that the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights and UNICEF will work jointly to protect children’s rights in Bangladesh. A caucus will be formed with the chairpersons of the relevant parliamentary standing committees, government and opposition members of parliament to protect the interests of children and formulate child-friendly policies. He expressed hope that this caucus will play an important role in discussing child rights in parliament and increasing the budget.

Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP also said that the current Prime Minister is very sensitive to child rights. He gave necessary instructions to create opportunities for children to enjoy sitting in the parliament session gallery. He also expressed hope that Bangladesh will be able to play a leading role in the subcontinent on child rights by implementing programs in collaboration with various organizations.

The UNICEF delegation said that they have been able to include 10 priority rights, including children’s health, education and protection, in the election manifestos of various political parties. At the same time, they also appreciated the timely steps taken by the government to deal with the ongoing measles situation.

During the meeting, child rights, child-friendly policy formulation, budget increase, social protection and various bilateral cooperation issues were discussed.

Members of the UNICEF delegation and relevant officials of the National Parliament Secretariat were present at the time.
