Memorial service held for former Commerce Ministry Secretary Mahbubur Rahman

An emotional memorial service and prayer mahfil were held in memory of former Commerce Ministry Secretary Mahbubur Rahman. Speakers at the event recalled his professionalism, honesty and human qualities with deep respect.

Speaking as the chief guest at the event held at the conference room of the Commerce Ministry on Wednesday (April 22, 2026), Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said, “Mahbubur Rahman was one of my close colleagues from the beginning after taking charge at the Secretariat, with whom the experience of working was very positive and inspiring.”

The minister said, “There is a common perception in our country that there are differences of opinion between ministers and bureaucrats. But while working with Mahbubur Rahman, I always received sincere cooperation. He never had a negative attitude, but always prioritized the interests of the country.”

He further said that Mahbubur Rahman had a special quality – he never made negative comments about his colleagues or any other official. It is very easy to criticize, but he did not walk that path. This is a manifestation of his extraordinary personality, the minister added.

While sharing his personal memories, the minister said that despite his busy schedule, Mahbubur Rahman was always dedicated to his duties. Even after working till 9:30 at night, he did not hesitate to go to the field with me to observe the market situation. His dedication for the sake of the people of the country will be exemplary for us.

Other speakers present at the event also remembered Mahbubur Rahman’s dedication, efficiency and humane behavior and prayed for the forgiveness of his departed soul.

Secretary (Routine Responsibilities) of the Ministry of Commerce Md. Abdur Rahim Khan,
Chairman of the Tea Board Major General Md. Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Chairperson of Bangladesh Competition Commission AHM Ahsan, Additional Secretary (FTA) of the Ministry of Commerce Ayesha Akhter, wife of former Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Farhana Alam and elder brother Lutfar Rahman delivered commemorative speeches.

After the memorial service, special prayers and supplications were offered for the repose of his soul.

It is worth noting that on April 13, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman was admitted to Square Hospital in Dhaka due to a decrease in blood platelets. Later, tests revealed that he had malaria.

He passed away at 6.30 am on April 17.

Mahbubur Rahman was an officer of the 13th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Customs and Excise) cadre. He assumed the charge of the Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce on February 25 last year.
