Direct farmer-consumer connection will bring relief to the market – Commerce Minister

Desk Report:

‘Krishaker Haat’ has been launched for the first time in Sylhet under government management to reduce the violence of middlemen, ensure fair prices for farmers and provide safe food at affordable prices to consumers.

Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir officially inaugurated the initiative, organized in the area adjacent to Tilagarh Point in the city on Saturday (April 11, 2026) morning.

Through this program, which was started under the slogan “Safe and fresh products directly from farmers” by the Sylhet District Administration and the Department of Agricultural Extension, marginal farmers will get the opportunity to sell their products directly to consumers without any middlemen.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, the Commerce Minister said that the government is taking various new initiatives to bring transparency and balance in market management. He said that sometimes agricultural products change hands four to five times to reach the consumer from the producer, resulting in unreasonable price increases. The ‘Farmer’s Haat’ will create a ‘win-win’ situation for both the farmer and the consumer by reducing this intermediate level.
The minister also mentioned that the direct connection between the farmer and the consumer will bring relief to the market.

He further said that this haat will be held on specific days of the week at designated places under the supervision of the district and upazila administrations, where farmers will sell their products directly. He also mentioned that there will be no scope for extortion or unexpected expenses due to the administration’s surveillance.

He said that the government has taken initiatives to modernize the supply system to keep the market stable. The entire supply chain from import to retail will be brought under an integrated digital model, so that market supervision is easy and any kind of manipulation can be quickly identified.

The Commerce Minister also said that the activities of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will be further strengthened to maintain balance in the market of daily necessities. An effective ‘counter balance’ will be created in the market by importing more goods through TCB.

The Minister also emphasized on the expansion of irrigation system and re-excavation of canals for the development of the agricultural sector. He expressed the hope that if these initiatives are implemented, agricultural production will increase and the country’s market will be more stable in the future.

The program was presided over by Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam, Divisional Commissioner Khan Md. Reza-un-Nabi, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury, Acting President Rezaul Hasan Qays Lodi, Sylhet Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khoshnur Rubaiyat and Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Shamsuzzaman and other concerned officials were present.

According to relevant sources, the activities of this market will be conducted at the designated place every morning. If this initiative is successful, farmers will receive a fair price for their produce and the general public will have the opportunity to purchase safe and fresh products at relatively low prices—which is expected to have a positive impact on the market.
