Desk Report:

The Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations celebrated Independence and National Day 2026 with due dignity and festive atmosphere. A reception was organized at a local hotel in New York today to mark the day. Permanent representatives of about 150 countries to the United Nations, high-ranking officials of the UN Secretariat, diplomatic figures and representatives of various international organizations were present at the event. Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman was present as the chief guest at the event.

In his speech as the chief guest, the Foreign Minister said that since Bangladesh became a member of the United Nations in 1974, Bangladesh has been holding multilateralism as one of the foundations of its foreign policy. Reiterating Bangladesh’s commitment to establishing international peace and security, he highlighted Bangladesh’s important contribution to UN peacekeeping operations and continued humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya people. He mentioned that Bangladesh has achieved significant socio-economic progress in the last five decades, overcoming various adversities and through constructive engagement in line with the principles of the UN Charter.

At the beginning of the program, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN, delivered a welcome speech. He said that March 26 is not only the birth of a nation, but also a symbol of the indomitable will, dignity and ultimate victory of independence of the Bengali nation.

Earlier in the morning, a discussion meeting was organized at the mission auditorium to mark the day. Messages of eminent personalities were read out and a special documentary was screened highlighting the significance of the day.
