National elections to be held in first half of February: Home Affairs Adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) has expressed optimism that the 11th National Parliamentary elections will be held in the first half of February.

He expressed this optimism when German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Rudiger Loltz called on him at his office in the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (November 18, 2025) afternoon.

The meeting discussed issues related to the mutual interests of the two countries, including the public reaction after Sheikh Hasina’s verdict, the date of the national elections and overall preparations for this occasion, prisoner extradition, cybercrime and the overall law and order situation in the country.

Welcoming the German ambassador, the advisor said that Germany and Bangladesh are tested friends. He expressed optimism that bilateral relations will further strengthen in the near future. When the ambassador asked about the date and time of the election and the overall preparations, the advisor said, “I hope the election will be held on time. However, it is the responsibility of the Election Commission to determine the specific day and date.” He said, “Our law enforcement agencies are fully prepared, whatever date the Election Commission decides for the national election.”

When the ambassador asked about the situation after Sheikh Hasina’s verdict, the advisor said, “The law and order situation is normal. Except for one or two minor isolated incidents, the situation is calm. If anyone wants to disrupt the law and order situation, it will be suppressed with a strong hand.” When asked about the level of crime, the advisor said, “Crime is not increasing. It is under control.” He said, “People are now able to express their opinions freely. Which they could not do during the last 15 years of the fascist Sheikh Hasina’s rule.”

Additional Secretary (Political) of the Ministry of Home Affairs Khandaker Md. Mahabubur Rahman, Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy Anja Kersten, and others were present at the meeting.
