Police’s role is paramount in making the next election free, fair and impartial: Home Affairs Adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has said that the role of the police is paramount and most important in making the next national election free, fair and impartial. The biggest responsibility of fulfilling the expectations of all the people of this country, including political parties, rests on the shoulders of the police. Everyone expects that the Bangladesh Police will set a standard in the upcoming national election, which will be appreciated not only in the country but also in the international arena. The current interim government, including the Bangladesh Police, is working towards this end.

The Adviser said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a special crime review meeting organized by the Bangladesh Police at the ‘Hall of Pride’ conference room of the Police Headquarters in the capital Dhaka on Monday (October 27, 2025) morning.

The meeting was chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam BPM and was attended by DIGs of various ranks of the police, Metropolitan Police Commissioners and District Police Superintendents through CISCO video conference. Senior officers of the Police Headquarters were present at the time.

The advisor said that the implementation of the law is established not only with force, but also with justice, integrity and humanity. Addressing the police, he said that in the election field, you are not only the protectors of law and order; you are the symbol of protecting the security, trust and democratic rights of the people.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said that mutual discussions and dialogue have started between the political parties regarding the upcoming elections. In this regard, no police member can support any political party, give or receive special benefits and consider himself a political worker. The advisor said that the police has a list of fascists. They are directly involved in creating unrest in the society and the state. Moreover, many criminals are committing crimes after being released on bail. He said, arrests should be increased to prevent fascist misdeeds, propaganda, anti-politics, crimes and sudden processions. However, innocent people cannot be harassed.

Calling on senior police officers, the Home Affairs Adviser said, steps should be taken to increase the professionalism, team spirit, discipline and morale of subordinate police officers and troops. Strict administrative and legal action should be taken against those among the subordinates who lack professionalism, lack discipline, do not want to obey commands, and who want to show disrespect to the government and the state.

The Adviser also said, frequent core committee meetings should be called at the district level. Political harassment cases should be withdrawn quickly, false cases should be settled as soon as possible. He said, the Special Branch of the Police should be made more active. All the issues of the district should be kept at the fingertips.

The operation to recover looted or lost or illegal weapons from the police station must be expedited. He also said that the security of the KPIs of the district must be strengthened. Accidents like fire are increasing. Everyone, including the police, must be vigilant in this regard.

Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that attacks on the police will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He instructed the concerned to take immediate legal action in this regard. The advisor said that cyber crime is increasing recently. Young police officers must play a leading role in preventing such crimes.

At the crime review meeting, the advisor answered various questions of DIGs of different ranges, Metropolitan Police Commissioners and District Police Superintendents and provided necessary advice.
