Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Dr. Qi Dongyu jointly inaugurated the new office of the ‘Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty’ at FAO headquarters in Rome.
Brazil and Bangladesh are co-founders of the Global Alliance. President Lula first proposed the idea of this global initiative nearly a decade ago.
At the opening ceremony, the three leaders officially launched the new office of the Global Alliance by cutting the ribbon and shaking hands.
They called it an important milestone in addressing global hunger and poverty, and said that the world is currently facing severe famines in Gaza and Sudan, where more than 300 million people are food insecure, and that joint efforts and global solidarity are needed most now.
Principal Advisor Professor Yunus said, “Let us work together—to end hunger, to fight poverty.”
President Lula and Dr. Qi Dongyu, in their brief speeches, highlighted the significance of this partnership and said that the Global Alliance will open new doors for coordinated action to ensure global food security.
Also present at the event were several ministers from Brazil, Food Advisor Ali Imam Majumdar of Bangladesh, and Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar.
