Highest quality treatment will be ensured for firefighter burnt in chemical warehouse fire in Tongi: Home Affairs Adviser

Highest quality treatment will be ensured for firefighter burnt while extinguishing a chemical warehouse fire in Tongi, Gazipur, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has said.

The advisor made this statement while briefing reporters after visiting the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in the capital on Tuesday (September 23, 2025) morning to see the injured (burned) fire service personnel.

The advisor said, four of our firefighters were admitted to the Burn Institute after being burnt in an accident at a chemical warehouse in Tongi yesterday. Two of them have more burns and two have less. He said, the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute is an international standard hospital. The medical system here is very good. The doctors here and the concerned people are trying to provide the best service. He also said, we pray to Allah Almighty that they (the injured and burnt victims) recover quickly.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said, all kinds of cooperation will be provided from our side for the proper treatment of the burnt firefighters. Necessary instructions have been given to the Director General of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department and the Director of the National Burn Institute in this regard. The advisor said, no kind of negligence or carelessness can be done in the treatment of the injured. The advisor also said, all kinds of steps will be taken to ensure the highest quality treatment of the injured.

At the briefing, National Burn Institute Director Professor Dr. Mohammad Nasir Uddin said, we will always have a monitoring team working in the treatment of the burnt victims. He said, such a question came up at that time whether the injured in the plane crash at Uttara Milestone School and College will be treated in the country or abroad. He also said, we will take a coordinated decision on this matter. In this case, priority will be given to science rather than giving priority to emotions. We will do everything we can to provide good treatment to the patients.

Among others, Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, Director General of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, along with senior officials and doctors of the National Burn Institute were present.

The injured fire service personnel undergoing treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute are Tongi Fire Station Warehouse Inspector Khandaker Jannatul Naeem (42% burns), Firefighter Shamim Ahmed (100% burns), Firefighter Md. Nurul Huda (100% burns) and Firefighter Md. Joy Hasan (5% burns). In addition, Al Amin Babu, an employee of the chemical godown who was injured in the accident, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

It is worth noting that yesterday (September 22), four fire personnel from the Tongi Fire Station and an employee of the factory were burned while trying to put out the fire when a fire broke out in a chemical godown in Sahara Market, Tongi, Gazipur district.
