174 Bangladeshis return from Libya

Desk Report:

A total of 174 irregular Bangladeshi citizens who voluntarily wanted to repatriate to the country were brought back to Bangladesh from Tripoli, Libya, by Buraq Air (UZ-0222) flight today (June 1, 2026) at 05:10 am through the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, in cooperation with the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Most of the repatriated Bangladeshis are known to have entered Libya with the instigation and cooperation of human traffickers with the aim of illegally reaching Europe by sea. There are allegations that many of them were abducted and tortured in Libya at different times.

Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the concerned ministries and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) received the repatriated Bangladeshi citizens at the airport. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested them to share their harrowing experience with everyone to raise public awareness.

IOM provided travel expenses, some food items, first aid and temporary accommodation to each repatriated person if necessary.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are working together to ensure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshi citizens detained in various detention centers in Libya.
