Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has urged police officers to develop themselves as people-friendly police.
The advisor said these things as the chief guest at a view-exchange meeting with police officers on the occasion of Police Week 2025 at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital on Tuesday (April 29, 2025) afternoon.

The advisor said that the hearts of the people should be won by the behavior, service mentality and sincerity of the police members. Through this, there will be a positive change in the public’s attitude towards the police. He said that the common people should be kept in mind that they should not be subjected to any kind of harassment and suffering. The police should perform their duties impartially, free from political influence. No special benefits should be taken from anyone. They should keep themselves away from bribery and corruption.
Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said, after assuming the charge of Home Affairs Advisor, I visited various police units and police stations. During the visit, various problems of the police came to my attention. Among them, the most glaring problem is the problem of accommodation and food of the subordinate forces. He said, steps have been taken to solve the problem of police vehicles. The process of purchasing 200 pick-up vans for the police station is underway, which will be raised in the Cabinet Committee on Procurement today. The Ministry of Home Affairs is working to solve these problems and other problems.

The advisor also said that police members face many challenges while working. The most important thing to face this challenge is – patience of police members. Many problems can be solved through discussions with patience. He said, unnecessary lathicharge or use of force cannot be done.
Stating that the current government is working for the far-reaching welfare of the police, the advisor said that steps are being taken to remove the upper limit (ceiling) in providing risk allowance from constables to SIs. As a result, lower-level police officers will get risk allowance at a higher rate than before. He said that initiatives have been taken to provide loans to police members for purchasing motorcycles. In the first phase, this loan will be provided to SIs and ASIs of the police. The government will also be requested to pay the interest on the loan. He further said that the government is thinking of posting subordinate police members within their larger districts. Similarly, if both husband and wife are police members, they will be given priority in posting in the same district.
The advisor said that there is a manpower crisis in the police. Therefore, there is a need to increase the manpower in their organizational structure (TO&E). He directed the IGP to take necessary steps in this regard. He said that the nature and scale of crime and terrorist activities are changing day by day. Therefore, there is no alternative to training to curb these crimes. He also directed the posting of skilled and qualified officers to various training institutes.

The meeting also discussed the establishment of traffic boxes/shelters with necessary facilities to facilitate the traffic officers in performing their duties, setting up tents for police members patrolling at night, conducting strong operations to catch the main drug lords, etc.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on Home Affairs Md. Khoda Bakhas Chowdhury, Senior Secretary to the Home Ministry Nasimul Gani, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sazzat Ali ndc. IGP Baharul Alam BPM delivered the welcome speech. Members of all units of Bangladesh Police participated in the meeting.
Later, the advisor participated in the question and answer session and answered various questions of the police officers.
