A high-level conference titled “From Policy to Action – Integrated Approaches for Combating Plastics and Marine Litter Prevention in Bangladesh” was held on Thursday (6 February, 2025), jointly organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Department of Environment (DoE), and the Norwegian government.

The event brought together key policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss solutions for tackling plastic pollution in Bangladesh. Among the notable attendees were Ms. Sayeda Rizwana Hasan, Honorable Advisor, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC); H.E. Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen, Ambassador of Norway to Bangladesh; and Mr. Jérôme Stucki, Chief, Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency, UNIDO.

Discussions centered on policy interventions, waste management strategies, sustainable alternatives, consumer awareness, and the management of biomedical plastic waste. The conference emphasized the need for a multi-stakeholder approach to combat the growing threat of plastic pollution in the country.

As part of the “Integrated Approach Towards Sustainable Plastics Use and Marine Litter Prevention in Bangladesh” project, the event underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and policy implementation to promote a circular economy and reduce environmental damage caused by plastic waste.

Experts stressed that stronger regulations, investment in waste recycling infrastructure, and community engagement are crucial for sustainable plastic management. The initiative also aims to align Bangladesh’s efforts with global best practices in tackling marine litter and plastic pollution.

This conference marks a significant step towards translating policies into actionable solutions, reinforcing Bangladesh’s commitment to environmental sustainability through international partnerships and innovative approaches.
