UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reiterated his call for the international community to provide more support for the Rohingya population to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in refugee camps in Bangladesh.
He said, “I sincerely appeal to the international community so that we can avert this humanitarian catastrophe.”
He told reporters at a joint briefing with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Towhid Hossain at a hotel in the capital today (March 15, 2025) on Saturday.
The UN Secretary-General called on the international community to take on more responsibility and provide the necessary financial and political support for Bangladesh, which hosts refugees as well as them.
He said, “This is a crucial moment for Bangladesh and the international community should support your efforts towards a just, inclusive and prosperous future.”
Noting that Bangladesh is undergoing important reforms and changes, Guterres assured that the UN stands ready to help strengthen peace, national dialogue, trust and reconciliation.
The UN Secretary-General said, “You can count on the UN as a reliable partner who will work shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh to build a sustainable and just future.”
He specifically mentioned Bangladesh’s extraordinary generosity in the Rohingya crisis.
