Trade between India and Bangladesh will continue in the interest of consumers and traders: Trade Adviser

Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin said, trade between India and Bangladesh will continue in the interest of consumers and traders. We do not know anything officially about India’s steps yet. We will be able to take action after knowing officially. If any problem arises or arises, both sides will try to resolve it through discussion.

The advisor said these things in response to journalists’ questions about India’s decision to import goods from Bangladesh in his office at the Secretariat today (May 18, 2025).

The trade adviser said, we have learned from social media and news that they have taken some decisions regarding land ports, especially Akhaura, Dawki and some border areas. He said, our main goal is to achieve competitiveness. This is a profitable matter for both countries. We think that India itself is a country rich in textile or garment industry. Even then, when these products are exported from our country, it is based on our capabilities.

He also said, we do not have the influence of transshipment. We have solved this problem on our own by using our own capabilities.

Sheikh Bashiruddin said, since we are a geographically connected country, our competitiveness, transportation costs and other factors are certain. In this case, we impose restrictions on the import of our agricultural products at different times, India also does. This is the process of trade management and we are working on it. If there is a problem or problem, both sides will discuss and try to solve it.

The advisor said, I believe in free trade. Trade is important to me. I see no other way than trade liberalization and trade inclusion to increase the capacity of the businessmen and consumers of my country. Regarding the trade deficit, he also said, we will work to increase trade through our diversification and competition.
