There is a possibility of reducing US tariffs if trade deficit can be reduced: Trade Adviser

Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin said that Bangladesh wants to further reduce the additional 20 percent countervailing duty imposed on Bangladeshi products in the US market.

He told the media after a meeting with Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch at the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce on Sunday (September 14) afternoon.

The advisor said that the delegation arrived in Dhaka today on a three-day visit to finalize the trade agreement between the two countries based on discussions and agreements on countervailing duties. There were cordial discussions with them.

If Bangladesh can achieve our objective of reducing the trade deficit with the US, we can hope that there is a possibility of reducing our tariffs. At this time, Sheikh Bashiruddin also said that there is a possibility of a reciprocal tariff agreement with the US soon.

He said, the progress of the products that have already been promised to increase purchases from the country to reduce the trade deficit between the two countries was discussed. Mainly, the promise to buy aircraft, along with agricultural and energy products, has been made. Good progress has also been made in the purchase.
At this time, Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Mahbubur Rahman and Chairman of the National Skill Development Authority Dr. Nazneen Kausar Chowdhury were present.
