Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has assured all-round cooperation of the government in the development of the country’s tea industry, increasing production capacity and sustainable resolution of long-standing problems. At the same time, he has ordered the formation of a committee comprising the concerned ministries, departments and stakeholders to quickly identify the existing problems of the industry and ensure effective solutions.

He said these things at a meeting on the development of the country’s tea industry at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (July 26, 2026).

In the meeting, the owners and concerned representatives of various tea gardens in the country presented various issues including the current status of the industry, increasing production costs, financing crisis, energy costs and challenges of maintaining competitiveness in the international market before the Prime Minister. At this time, they also presented various demands and proposals for the sustainable development of the tea industry.

The Prime Minister listened attentively to the statements of all the parties concerned and mentioned the tea industry as an important sector of the national economy.

He said that the government will provide necessary policy, financial and institutional support for the development of the tea industry. He also assured that the issue of easing existing debt obligations, providing low-interest loans and creating opportunities for solar power generation on uncultivable land will be positively considered.

The Prime Minister also said that the government will provide necessary support in implementing renewable energy projects, so that it is possible to reduce the production cost of the tea industry and increase the competitiveness of the industry in the long term.

At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister directed the formation of a committee comprising the concerned ministries, departments and stakeholders. This committee will review the existing problems of the tea industry and work to formulate and implement effective recommendations quickly.
