Speakers and a roundtable discussion on Saturday (7 March 2026) urged the government to take necessary measures to lessen treatment cost of kidney diseases, increasing treatment facilities across the country and undertaking massive awareness raising program across the country to prevent the deadly diseases including the most harmful kidney disease.
They stressed need for strategies to enhance early detection, prevention, and treatment accessibility, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts between medical institutions, policymakers, and the media.
The Kidney Awareness Monitoring and Prevention Society (KAMPS), a voluntary organisation, arranged the roundtable discussion Titled “Climate Change & Kidney Disease: Risks and Solutions” ahead of the World Kidney Day-2026 at the National Press Club.
Eminent Educationist and social reformist, founder of ‘Bishwa Shahittya Kendro’, Prof Abdullah Aby Sayed attended the discussion as the key-speaker while KAMPS Chairman and Head of the Department of Nephrology, Anwer Khan Modern Hospital, Prof. Dr MA Samad presided and moderated the discussion session.
In his keynote speech, Prof Dr MA Samad stressed needs to he said the World Kidney Day authority has emphasized this year on climate change and environmental causes behind unknown reasons of kidney diseases in its theme for the year 2026.
Referring to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Prof. Samad said Kidney disease is one of the main reasons of death across the globe. At least 85 crores of people are suffering from this disease worldwide. In Bangladesh Kidney disease turning into an epidemic gradually while in recent year climate change and environmental reasons have been added as the new threat for this disease.
He said that at least 3 crore and 80 lakhs of people in Bangladesh are somehow affected by kidney disease of them almost 80,000 patients have to depend on dialysis every year, whereas at least in 60 to 70 percent cases it’s possible to prevent the risk of kidney disease through awareness and by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Chairman of Bangladesh Kidney Foundation, Prof Dr. Harunur Rashid said it will be hard to control kidney disease unless we can control diabetes and high blood pressure.
Mentioning that unawareness is the main reason, Prof. Harun said people do not try to understand, if its possible to detect at first or 2d stage then it’s easy to treat but it become impossible to cure while it goes upto 3rd stage.

Speakers appreciated the initiative taken by KAMPS to work relentlessly for about 22 years in preventing the kidney disease, arranging treatment facilities at a less cost, spreading dialysis facilities in different parts of the country.
