The mastermind of the July Movement is the Bangladeshi democracy-loving people: Tarique Rahman to BBC

Tareque Rahman, the acting chairman of BNP, one of the main political parties in Bangladesh, has given a face-to-face interview to a media outlet after almost two decades. In the interview with BBC Bangla, he highlighted the party’s upcoming election strategy, the politics of the Awami League and the trial of its leaders and activists, the election situation and BNP’s position on various contemporary issues.

In the interview, Tarique Rahman said, “Physically, I may not be in this country, but my mentality and mind have remained in Bangladesh for the past 17 years. It may not have been possible to return to the country yet due to personal reasons. However, it seems that the time has come. Insha Allah, I will return to the country soon. I will make my utmost effort, desire and interest to stand by the people in the election that the people expect.”

He further mentioned, “This movement known as the 5th of August or July Movement is not just a recent event, but has been in the making for many years. All democratic political parties in Bangladesh, be it BNP or other parties, have contributed to this movement in various ways. But the main thing is that the mastermind of this movement is not any individual or party, but the democracy-loving people of Bangladesh.”

Tarique Rahman’s comment clearly reflects BNP’s view that people’s faith in democracy and participation are the main strength of the country’s political movement.
