New dimension to Bangladesh-Malaysia relations, PM Tarique Rahman’s phone conversation with Malaysian PM on energy and investment in discussions

Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought Malaysian cooperation in addressing the ongoing energy crisis in the country. He spoke to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the phone at 2 pm Bangladesh time on Tuesday (July 28, 2026). At the same time, Bangladesh’s urgent needs were conveyed through a letter.

In the phone conversation, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman highlighted the existing gas crisis in Bangladesh and sought cooperation in supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) through Malaysia’s state-owned energy company PETRONAS. He said that LNG supply is very necessary on an urgent basis to ensure the country’s energy security.

In response, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed sympathy for the current situation in Bangladesh and assured to stand by to deal with the crisis. He said that the matter is being considered seriously and a decision will be announced as soon as possible.

The discussion between the two prime ministers also emphasized the need to further strengthen Bangladesh-Malaysia bilateral relations. They discussed in detail the expansion of mutual cooperation, especially in the energy and investment sectors.

During the meeting, both leaders also exchanged views on various aspects of economic cooperation. The ongoing investment progress of Malaysian telecommunications company Axiata and possible strategic cooperation with MMC Port in the port development sector also came up in the discussion. It was hoped that these initiatives will further strengthen the economic relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia and create new investment and trade opportunities for both countries.
