Algerian Ambassador Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani paid a courtesy call on Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram MP at his office on Sunday (May 3, 2026).
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said that the future joint progress of Bangladesh and Algeria will be accelerated by relying on a strong foundation of people-to-people contact and cultural exchanges between the people of the two countries. He said that the Algerian government’s support for Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman of the Bangladesh government at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has further energized the ongoing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Algeria.
The Speaker said that democracy in Bangladesh was endangered during the last 16 years of Sheikh Hasina’s rule. The regime imposed a reign of terror through repression and extrajudicial killings on opposition parties. The sacrifice of the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during this long period of restoring democracy is unforgettable in history. She said that the people of Bangladesh have regained their democratic rights by exercising their right to vote in the last national elections.
The Algerian Ambassador said that the government and people of Algeria have greatly appreciated the last free and fair national elections held in Bangladesh.
During the meeting, they both exchanged views on sports, technical assistance, shipbuilding industry, garment exports, cooperation in the education sector and energy between the two countries.
The Speaker emphasized the formation of a parliamentary friendship group with Algeria, establishment of strong diplomatic relations and exchange of visits of parliamentary delegations.
Members of the delegation of the Algerian Embassy and relevant senior officials of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
