Adviser for Shipping and Labour and Employment Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain participated in the two-day ‘World Maritime Day Parallel Event-2025’ in Dubai on Tuesday (September 30, 2025). Ministers, diplomats, shipping sector experts and policymakers from different countries of the world were present at this event organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Next year, the event will be held in Seoul, South Korea.
Adviser Dr. Sakhawat Hossain highlighted various capacity-building strategies and initiatives for developing countries in a panel discussion titled ‘Capacity Building for Sustainable Oceans’. He emphasized the need to more actively involve countries like Bangladesh in this process.
His speech highlighted the importance of sustainable maritime management, development of skilled manpower in the shipping sector, use of environmentally friendly technologies and international cooperation in conservation of marine resources. He also mentioned the importance of international experience and technical assistance in developing Bangladesh’s maritime economy.
In addition to the panels and meetings, the advisor participated in bilateral discussions with representatives of various countries and strategic partners. He discussed the achievements of Bangladesh’s shipping sector, future plans and opportunities for increasing international cooperation.
Dr. Sakhawat Hossain sought the support of member countries for Bangladesh in the ‘C’ category in the IMO Council elections to be held next December. He expressed the hope that Bangladesh’s participation in such international events will take the country to a strong position in the global shipping sector and further strengthen the country’s image and role in international policymaking.
