The next election must be made historic and memorable: Chief Adviser to Upazila Nirbahi

Referring to the upcoming post-people’s uprising election as an opportunity to build a new Bangladesh, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus said that this election must be made memorable by organizing it beautifully and fairly.

The Chief Adviser said this while giving guidance on election preparations to Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) from across the country through a video conference today (December 10, 2025) from the State Guest House Jamuna.

All the Deputy Commissioners, Divisional Commissioners and Cabinet Division officials were connected online at this time.

The Chief Adviser also said to the UNOs at this time, ‘History has given us a new opportunity. Another generation will not get this opportunity. If we can utilize this opportunity, we will be able to build a new Bangladesh, and if we cannot, the nation will be in trouble.’

The Chief Advisor said, we have seen elections before. Any sane person would say that the elections held in the past were not elections, but fraud.

He said, the upcoming elections are not like other responsibilities; rather, they are a historic responsibility. If we can fulfill this responsibility well, then the next election day will be historic for the people as well.

Addressing the Upazila Nirbahi Officers, the Chief Advisor said, only if you fulfill your responsibilities properly will the government be able to fulfill its responsibilities successfully.

Stating that both the upcoming elections and the referendum are very important for the nation, he said, elections are for the next five years, and the referendum is for a hundred years.

Regarding the referendum, he said, ‘Through this, we can permanently change Bangladesh. We can build the foundation of the new Bangladesh that we want to create through this.’

The Chief Advisor said to the newly-joined UNOs, your main responsibility is to organize a peaceful and joyful election.

He advised the UNOs to visit all the polling stations in their respective areas as well as discuss with all the parties concerned, locals and colleagues and prepare for organizing a beautiful election.

Stressing the importance of making voters aware of the referendum, he said, ‘Voters need to be convinced that you should make up your mind—whether you will vote “Yes” or “No”—make up your mind.’

The Chief Advisor compared the officials to midwives and said that if the midwives are good, the babies born are also good.

He instructed the officials to be creative in dealing with any situation and to take measures to prevent misinformation and rumors.

Emphasizing the need to give priority to women in participating in the elections, he said, it must be ensured that women can come to the polling stations properly.

Stating that the election schedule will be announced soon, Chief Advisor Professor Yunus told the UNOs, “Plan and prepare now for when, how, and what work you will do until the election is completed.”

The event was attended by Chief Advisor’s Principal Secretary M Siraj Uddin Mia, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Mohammad Shafiqul Alam, and Public Administration Secretary Md. Ehsanul Haque, along with senior officials.
