The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has been renamed Special Intervention Force (SIF), Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said.
The advisor informed the journalists about the name change at the end of the meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (February 03, 2026) afternoon.
The advisor said that a committee was formed under the chairmanship of the Chief Advisor on Defense and National Integration Development, Lieutenant General Abdul Hafiz (retd.) regarding the restructuring of RAB. The committee recommended changing the name of RAB to the new name “Special Intervention Force (SIF)”, which was approved by the Chief Advisor to the interim government. He said that a notification will be issued in this regard very soon. Once the notification is issued, this force will start working with new enthusiasm and enthusiasm. At the same time, the uniform of the force will also be changed. However, not only the name and uniform, but also the activities of the force will be reformed.
Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said that an “Electoral Management Exercise” has been arranged at the Tentuljhora College polling station in Tentuljhora Union of Savar Upazila of Dhaka district this afternoon with the participation of election officials and members of various law enforcement agencies. The advisor said that through this exercise, the public will be able to know about the role and capabilities of law enforcement agencies in the elections.
Speaking about the looted and illegal weapons recovered, Brigadier General Md. Ali Haider Siddiqui, Director General (Operations and Plans) of the Armed Forces Division, said that since the election schedule was announced by the Election Commission, the armed forces have been able to recover 199 weapons and 1,972 ammunition and arrest 1,807 people. He said that 1 lakh 6 thousand 223 members of the armed forces have been deployed across the country under the ‘In Aid to Civil Power’. He further said that the Armed Forces Division has so far been able to recover 4,432 weapons from the weapons lost by the police and RAB; and 65 weapons from the weapons lost by the prison authorities; 328 licensed weapons and 2,906 weapons of various types, making a total of 7,731 weapons recovered by the armed forces.
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, IGP Baharul Alam BPM, Director General (Operations and Plans) of the Armed Forces Division Brigadier General Md. Ali Haider Siddiqui and others were present at the briefing.
