Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has returned home after participating in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He arrived in Dhaka on the morning of Sunday (September 27, 2026), accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, following a five-day visit to the United States.
The Emirates Airlines flight carrying the Prime Minister landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at approximately 8:20 AM. He was welcomed at the airport by Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, MP, a member of the BNP National Standing Committee and Minister of Rural Development and Cooperatives.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had traveled to New York, USA, on September 21 to attend the UNGA session. This marked his first participation in the UNGA and his first address to the General Debate as Prime Minister.
On September 24, the Prime Minister delivered a speech in Bangla during the General Debate of the 81st General Assembly session at the UN headquarters. In his address, he outlined Bangladesh’s position and priorities regarding various critical issues, including global peace, multilateralism, the Rohingya crisis, the Palestine issue, climate justice, Bangladesh’s development and democratic progress, women’s empowerment, education, health, technology, and the potential of the youth.
In his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted the “3-R” strategy—Recovery, Restoration, and Reconstruction—for the rebuilding of Bangladesh. He stated that the government is working towards transforming Bangladesh into a prosperous, self-reliant, and welfare-oriented democratic state through economic recovery, the re-establishment of democratic and social institutions, and long-term reconstruction.
Emphasizing dialogue and diplomatic processes for resolving conflicts in the international arena, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to multilateralism. At the same time, he sought a more effective role from the international community in achieving a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis and cooperation for the safe and dignified repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of climate justice, climate finance, and increased adaptation support to tackle the adverse effects of climate change. At the same time, she called for ensuring technology transfer, skill development, and affordable access to modern technology for developing nations.
On the sidelines of the UNGA session, the Prime Minister held meetings and interactions with heads of state and government from various countries, as well as with senior representatives of international organizations. During these meetings, alongside highlighting Bangladesh’s national interests and priorities, discussions were held on matters of mutual interest—including strengthening bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment, the Rohingya crisis, climate change, public health, and new avenues for development cooperation.
Additionally, the Prime Minister participated in various high-level events addressing climate change and sea-level rise, the Rohingya crisis, and maternal and neonatal healthcare.
By participating in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister emphasized showcasing Bangladesh’s global standing, priorities, and vision for future development, while also stressing the importance of further strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with various nations.
