The Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, has ordered the immediate rehabilitation of evicted hawkers from the streets of the capital Dhaka. He has asked the concerned authorities to take necessary measures in this regard.
He gave this order at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon this Saturday (April 25, 2026) at noon.
Senior officials of the Local Government Division, Dhaka North and South City Corporations, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartik (RAJUK) and DMP were present in the meeting.
In the meeting, the Prime Minister ordered to quickly determine alternative places in coordination with the concerned ministries and institutions. He said that the evicted hawkers should be rehabilitated in a place where they can do business with comfort and enthusiasm.
Recently, hundreds of shops were evicted from roads in Mirpur-1 area of Dhaka North City Corporation and Motijheel, Baitul Mukarram, Paltan and Gulistan of Dhaka South City Corporation.
It was decided in the meeting that the government will provide alternative places for the evicted hawkers. In addition, hawkers will be given identity cards through registration so that their activities can be conducted in an orderly manner.
In addition, the Prime Minister urged to take necessary measures to reduce traffic congestion on the roads during the beginning and end of classes in schools and colleges. She said that traffic congestion is caused due to uncontrolled car parking in front of educational institutions. To solve this problem, a part of the own grounds of the concerned educational institutions can be used for car parking.
Local Government Department Secretary Shahidul Hasan, Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) Chairman Engineer Riazul Islam, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Acting Commissioner Md. Sarwar and DIG (Traffic) Anisur Rahman were present at the meeting.
