Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the concerned to explore the possibilities of making Zakat management more effective and disciplined in the country.
He gave this instruction at a meeting held on Zakat management at the Cabinet Division on Monday (March 9, 2026). The Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Rony confirmed the matter.
He said that in the meeting, a detailed discussion was held on how to play a role in poverty alleviation in the country through effective Zakat management. Views were also exchanged on various aspects of institutionally managing Zakat money and utilizing it for the development of the poor.
A decision was taken in the meeting to restructure the Zakat Board. For this purpose, it has been recommended to form a committee under the leadership of Religious Affairs Minister Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad.
The proposed committee will include Allama Mufti Abdul Malek, Khatib of Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Dhaka, and Shaykh Ahmadullah, Chairman of As Sunnah Foundation, along with some top local Islamic economists and prominent scholars.
Government sources said that the proposed committee will review the structure of the country’s existing zakat system and prepare recommendations to make it more modern, transparent and poor-friendly. Through this, there is a plan to transform zakat into an effective social security system for poverty alleviation.
