President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called upon local businesspeople and expatriates to increase investment in various promising sectors of Sylhet, including tourism, tea, fisheries, and industry.
He made this call on Tuesday afternoon (September 15, 2026) at a civic reception organized by the City Corporation at the Sylhet City Corporation grounds.
The President stated that Sylhet holds immense potential in the tourism, tea, fisheries, and industrial sectors. With its hills, rivers, waterfalls, tea gardens, forests, and haors (wetlands), Sylhet stands as one of Bangladesh’s premier tourist regions. There are vast opportunities to further develop these sectors.

He said, “I believe that if those currently living abroad—who possess the necessary capabilities—come forward to invest in these sectors, our tourism industry will see significant advancement.”
Highlighting the potential of the tea industry, the President noted that Sylhet’s tea gardens are renowned not only in Bangladesh but across the globe; consequently, the region holds a distinct advantage in terms of potential.
Referring to the prospects of fish farming in Sylhet’s haor regions, he pointed out the favorable conditions for aquaculture in these wetlands. Additionally, he noted the opportunity to establish large-scale industries by utilizing the region’s existing mineral and other natural resources.
The President also urged small entrepreneurs to come forward and capitalize on Sylhet’s promising sectors, including energy, agriculture, industry, tea, tourism, and gas.
He remarked that if local entrepreneurs and expatriates invest collaboratively, economic activities in Sylhet will gain momentum, leading to the creation of new employment opportunities.
