Police force is being made more public-friendly by increasing morale: Home Minister

Desk Report:

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that the current government deeply believes in the principles of ‘preservation of the good and suppression of the bad’ and ‘Punishment and Reward’. In light of this principle, the current government is working relentlessly to make the police force more service-oriented and public-friendly by increasing morale. This process of recognizing good deeds and reprimanding bad deeds will inspire every member of the police force to be more dutiful, sincere and fair.

The minister said these things while briefing journalists after the award ceremony in recognition of the commendable contributions and achievements of police members in three recent nationwide incidents at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (June 08, 2026).

The minister presented certificates and financial awards to a total of 15 police members in three particularly commendable incidents. Each of the awardees was given a financial grant of Tk 20,000 from the ministry’s special fund and 3 naval police members were given IG Badges.

In the briefing, the minister said that in the past, such a program was not often seen in the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Usually, such medals or badges are given in the annual programs of Rajarbagh Police Lines or Police Headquarters. However, this special initiative has been taken by the ministry to immediately increase the morale and morally boost the police members on duty at the field level. This will be a milestone in maintaining the legal system of the country and establishing the rule of law.

In response to a question from journalists, the minister said that the current government has succeeded in overcoming the crisis that arose regarding the image of the police force after August 5. The police are now much more people-friendly than before and have been able to gain the trust of the people. Citing comparative statistics of the crime picture of the past 2024 and 2025, he said that the crime rate of the country has decreased significantly during the current government compared to the previous years and the law and order situation has improved greatly in every category.

Regarding a recent report by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), the minister said that TIB is not a government organization and they do not conduct any investigation or judgment at the field level and only prepare reports based on newspaper cuttings. Therefore, there is no scope to comment on the reliability of this report. He said that the Ministry of Home Affairs collects accurate statistics of actual crimes from the district level through regular and routine work, which is completely satisfactory. However, the ministry considers every news published in the media seriously and if there is any discrepancy, it is examined and investigated.

Acknowledging the limitations of the government allocation to police officers in investigating cases, the minister said that due to the current national financial capacity and budget constraints, the allocation for investigation or postmortem may not be completely adequate. However, the ministry is actively considering increasing government allocations to speed up investigation activities, postmortems and police patrols in the future.

In response to another question regarding action against police officers who have been absconding in the past, the Home Minister clearly stated that no mercy will be shown against absconding or discipline-breaking officers. Multiple departmental cases have already been registered against each of the officers in question as per the rules and the investigation process is in its final stage. At the same time, those against whom cases are filed under the ICT Act or the Penal Code will face trial through the courts as per the prevailing laws of the country. The minister expressed his firm belief that no one, whoever the culprit, will be spared.

The three incidents that come under the ambit of the award are the rape and murder of Ramisa at Pallabi Police Station, the bravery of the naval police at Daulatdia ferry ghat and the murder of a clueless teenager in Gazaria, Munshiganj, respectively.

(1) Pallabi Police Station Ramisa Rape and Murder: Pallabi Zone Assistant Police Commissioner Md. Zahid Hossain and SI (Unarmed) Ahiduzzaman and a total of 9 officers of the Mirpur Zone Operation Team for arresting the accused in a very short time and expeditiously, completing DNA test and postmortem report, taking confessional statements under Section 164 and assisting the court in announcing the verdict as soon as possible through successful investigation.

(2) Naval Police Heroism at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat: 3 Naval Police officers including SI (Unarmed) Mohammad Abuzar Gifari of Char Janajat and Kalatala Naval Police Outpost in Madaripur for playing a unique role in saving the lives of at least 50 passengers by immediately evacuating a passenger bus at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat during their regular duty after Eid-ul-Azha.

(3) Clueless murder of a teenage girl in Gazaria, Munshiganj: Three officers, including SI (unarmed) Roni Debnath of PBI Munshiganj, worked to uncover the mystery of the gang rape and murder in just one day, without any clues, including identifying the body of an unidentified teenage girl recovered from the river, and arresting 4 accused and ensuring their statements in court under Section 164.

Secretary (Routine Responsibilities) of the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed and senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Police Headquarters were present at the event.
