Nuclear security integral part of national security: Defense Advisor

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Defense Advisor Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. AKM Shamsul Islam, PSC, G, said that nuclear security is not just a technical issue; it is directly related to national security, international commitments and state responsibilities.

He said this in a special lecture on nuclear security as an invited teacher at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) located in Mirpur Cantonment on Wednesday (May 13, 2026).

He delivered a speech on the topic “Nuclear Security: National Responsibility Under International Commitment and Its Implications on National Security” to the teachers and students of the Nuclear Security and Engineering Department of MIST.

In the lecture, the Defense Advisor mentioned nuclear security as an important and strategic issue of national security. He said that in the current world, the security of nuclear facilities, technology and infrastructure is not just an internal matter of any one country, but is deeply related to global security, regional stability and international trust.

He said that terrorism, cyber threats, technological risks, internal security vulnerabilities and the ability to deal with emergency situations have now become important considerations for nuclear security.

Regarding Bangladesh’s international commitments, he said that Bangladesh is committed to international standards, security culture and responsible management to ensure the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. To this end, he emphasized on trained manpower, technical capabilities, effective control systems and coordination between relevant agencies.

Regarding the security of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, he said that the Bangladesh Army is playing an important role in the security of the country’s strategically important facilities through professionalism, vigilance and inter-agency coordination.

At this time, he highlighted the existing and future challenges of nuclear security in Bangladesh and said that the issues of physical security, cyber security, dealing with internal threats, emergency response, trained human resources and increasing public awareness are now of particular importance. He also emphasized on strengthening research, training and international cooperation in this regard.

At the end of the speech, the Defense Advisor answered various questions from teachers and students and exchanged views on the principle and practical application of nuclear security.

Later, MIST Commandant Major General Md. Hakimuzzaman thanked the Defense Advisor.

During the visit, he inspected various technology-based projects including robotics and drones invented by students from different departments of MIST and praised the students’ innovative thinking and research activities. At the end, he participated in a photo session with teachers and students.
