Joris van Bommel, the Netherlands’ Ambassador to Bangladesh, has emphasized leveraging Dutch expertise and experience to strengthen water management, maritime security, and regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, including the Bay of Bengal.
He made these remarks while speaking at the ‘Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026’ held in Dhaka on Monday (October 5, 2026). At the event, organized by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS), the Ambassador highlighted various aspects of water management and maritime cooperation.
Regarding water management, Ambassador Joris van Bommel stated, “The Netherlands can collaborate with regional partners by utilizing its experience in maritime and water management, contributing to the development of practical solutions tailored to local needs.”
He noted that regional cooperation is crucial in addressing issues such as climate change, water usage, and the management of marine resources. In this context, he stressed the importance of devising effective and sustainable solutions that take local realities and requirements into account.
The Dutch Ambassador also highlighted the necessity of safeguarding freedom of navigation and further strengthening maritime security across the Indian Ocean region, including the Bay of Bengal.
He remarked that regional cooperation, democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and strong institutions that command public trust play a vital role in building a peaceful and prosperous region.
