Taffere Tesfachew, a member of the United Nations Committee for Development Policy (CDP), held a meeting with Anwar Hossain, Administrator of BGMEA on Tuesday (26 November, 2024) at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka.
The meeting was attended by Mr. A H M Jahangir, Wing Chief of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) and Project Director of the SSGP Project, along with Dr. Mostafa Abid Khan, Component Manager of the SSGP Project at ERD. Additionally, Mr. Inamul Huq Bablu, Mr. Shams Mahmud, Mr. Asif Ashraf, and Mr. Miran Ali, members of the Supporting Team, actively participated in the discussion.

The meeting focused on Bangladesh’s graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, its potential implications, and the country’s preparedness for a sustainable transition.
They discussed the challenges and opportunities arising from LDC graduation, particularly in relation to Bangladesh’s key economic sectors, including the ready-made garment industry.
Administrator Anwar Hossain shared insights into the current economic landscape of Bangladesh, highlighting the potential impacts of LDC graduation on various industrial sectors, with a specific focus on the RMG industry, which is a critical pillar of the national economy.
He emphasized the need for strategic planning to ensure that the transition is both smooth and sustainable, while mitigating any adverse effects on the workforce and business environment.
Both parties agreed on the importance of a comprehensive, inclusive approach to ensure that the transition enhances Bangladesh’s resilience, sustainable growth, and global competitiveness.
