LGRD Minister Orders Immediate Action to Address Dhaka’s Traffic Congestion, Dengue, and Waterlogging

Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, has directed that immediate and effective measures be taken to address traffic congestion, dengue, and waterlogging in Dhaka city.

He issued this directive on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) during a review meeting held at the Local Government Division’s conference room at the Secretariat. The meeting assessed the progress of initiatives regarding city cleanliness, dengue prevention, traffic congestion relief, canal excavation, waterlogging mitigation, and the creation of a safe and sustainable Dhaka.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, Mir Shahe Alam, attended the meeting as a special guest.

Officials, including Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan (Administrator, Dhaka North City Corporation) and Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam (Administrator, Dhaka South City Corporation), presented details on the ongoing activities of the respective city corporations.

The Minister stated that facilitating the movement of people in major cities is crucial. He noted that the loss of people’s valuable time on the roads has significant economic repercussions; therefore, effective initiatives must be taken to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure smooth mobility for city residents.

Regarding dengue prevention, he mentioned that the Prime Minister has inaugurated a program on this issue and emphasized the importance of cleanliness drives. He stressed the need to intensify ongoing dengue prevention efforts alongside regular cleaning operations.

Directing officials to take swift and effective action, the Minister stated that everyone involved must work in a coordinated manner to implement the decisions discussed in the meeting. He particularly emphasized reviewing the progress of the Prime Minister’s dengue prevention program and taking necessary follow-up actions.

State Minister Mir Shahe Alam remarked that the city corporations’ ongoing activities must be further strengthened to transform Dhaka into a clean, safe, and livable city. He underscored the importance of cleanliness drives for dengue prevention and the need for regular operations to destroy Aedes mosquito breeding grounds.

The meeting reviewed the ongoing activities aimed at ensuring cleanliness, preventing dengue, alleviating traffic congestion, excavating canals, mitigating waterlogging, and building a safe and sustainable Dhaka. The Minister and the State Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of various initiatives undertaken by the Dhaka North and South City Corporations.

Officials concerned from the Ministry and the Dhaka North and South City Corporations, including Md. Shahidul Hasan, Secretary of the Local Government Division, were present at the meeting.
