Independent Media Commission to be formed to ensure media freedom: Information and Broadcasting Minister

Desk Report:

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has said that the government will form an effective and independent Media Commission to ensure media freedom. He said that this commission will be formed unanimously based on the opinions of all stakeholders in the country, so that it is not considered an imposed structure.

The minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the online media Asia Post at the Bengal Center in Dhaka on Monday (May 11, 2026).

The minister said that the world is now going through a period of transformation. As the flow of information has become faster and easier due to the widespread use of digital technology, online media and the internet, the spread of misinformation, fake information and distorted information has also increased. He commented that protecting people from misinformation is a major challenge of the present time.

The minister also said that as a democratic state, the government wants to ensure the free flow of information on the one hand, and on the other hand, it also wants to protect the people from misleading information. He mentioned that the government had promised to ensure media freedom before assuming office and for that purpose, continuous exchange of views is going on with all the stakeholders concerned.

The Information Minister said that a new type of crisis has been created through the misuse of artificial intelligence or AI technology. To face this challenge, the government has taken the initiative to formulate new strategies. He sought the cooperation of media workers in this regard. At this time, he reiterated the government’s commitment to protect the freedom, honor and dignity of the media.

Asia Post’s staff, journalists and eminent persons from various fields were present at the event.
