Human rights situation indicators are improving: Law Minister

Desk Report:

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has said that the human rights situation indicators in Bangladesh are currently improving. Extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances have now been reduced to almost zero, and the number of missing and false cases has also been significantly reduced. He also mentioned that the cooperation of lawyers is needed to further advance this progress.

The minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at an iftar mahfil organized by the Dhaka University LLM Lawyers Association (DULA) at the Dhaka Club in the capital on Wednesday (March 11, 2026).

Referring to Section 173(A) of the Criminal Procedure Code, the Law Minister said that this section has been used as an effective safeguard to protect human rights. He said that in many cases, false cases have been filed against hundreds of people. These people are deprived of the opportunity to conduct business activities, travel abroad or receive medical treatment if they have to wait for police reports for years. To resolve this problem, arrangements have been made to submit an interim police report through higher police authorities.

Addressing the ‘DULA’ members present, the Law Minister said that it is possible to ensure the rule of law, justice and human rights in the country if the duties are performed with correct human values, efficiency, honesty and devotion. He also said that regardless of political philosophy, at the end of the day, everyone should remember that we are working for the people of Bangladesh.

The Minister said that we believe that it will be possible to ensure the rule of law, justice and human rights for the citizens in this country if the people engaged in the legal profession perform their duties properly from the place of their values.

Acting Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf, Supreme Court Senior Lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, DULA General Secretary Kazi Muhammad Joynal Abedin and others also spoke at the Iftar Mahfil held under the chairmanship of DULA President Sheikh Ali Ahmed Khokon.
