Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has sought Japan’s cooperation in police reform and restructuring. The minister sought this cooperation when Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh SAIDA Shinichi called on the minister at his office in the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat on Tuesday (March 3, 2026).
The minister said that Japan is a trusted friend and one of the largest development partners of Bangladesh. The country has invested in several major projects in Bangladesh, including the construction of the Metrorail and the third terminal of Shahjalal International Airport through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). We have many areas of cooperation with Japan. Japan has worked on traffic safety of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Japan can cooperate in police reform and restructuring in the future. In this regard, several proposals will be made on our part.
The meeting discussed various issues of mutual interest including law and order and security issues between the two countries, police restructuring, traffic control, trade and investment.
Assuring Japan’s continued cooperation in the infrastructural development of Bangladesh, the ambassador said that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s traffic safety project was completed last year. Japan is interested in working further with the Bangladesh Police and DMP.
Noting that this year will be the 10th anniversary of the Holey Artisan attack, the ambassador requested the minister to take necessary measures to enhance the security of Japanese citizens residing in Bangladesh. At the time, the minister said, we are ready to provide security to all Japanese citizens residing in Bangladesh, including Japanese investors and businessmen. He said, we will consider any request from Japan with the utmost importance.
Rebecca Khan, Joint Secretary of the Political-1 Branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs, KOMINE Ken, First Secretary (Political) of the Japanese Embassy, and MOCHIDA Yutaro, First Secretary (Economic), were present at the meeting.
