Hajj and religious ties have further strengthened Bangladesh-Saudi relations: Speaker

Diplomatic Desk:

Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram MP paid a courtesy call on Saudi Arabian Ambassador Dr. Abdullah Zafar bin Abiah at his office on Monday (4 May 2026).

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said that Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia have deep brotherly relations. Every year, a large number of Hajj pilgrims from Bangladesh travel to Mecca and Medina. He said that the holy Hajj, based on religious commonality, further strengthens mutual respect and long-term friendly bilateral relations between the people of the two countries.

The Speaker said that the democratic progress of Bangladesh has been enhanced through the parliamentary elections held in February 2026. The democratic rights of the people of Bangladesh have been undermined in the 16-year elections of the previous Awami League government.

During the meeting, they both exchanged views on strengthening inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries and the formation of a parliamentary friendship group. During this time, they discussed the role of America and Iran in the ongoing Middle East crisis.

The Speaker proposed to the Saudi Ambassador that the OIC play an effective role in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

Members of the delegation of the Saudi Arabian Embassy and senior officials of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
