Government working to make the country self-sufficient in food and suitable for export: State Minister for Food

Desk Report:

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Agriculture and Food Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said that the current government is working to make the country self-sufficient in food and suitable for exporting surplus food abroad.

The State Minister said this at a program to distribute free jute seeds, fertilizers and agricultural equipment among small, marginal and medium farmers under the agricultural incentive program to increase the production of jute crops in the Kharip-1 season of the 2025-26 fiscal year at the Tangail Sadar Upazila Parishad premises on Saturday (February 28, 2026).

The State Minister said that a large part of Tangail Sadar is char area. The government will make maximum efforts for the development of char areas. He said that there is a lot of fallow land in char. If these lands are brought under cultivation, marginal farmers will benefit, and food supply will also increase in the surrounding districts. He said, this is the first time that irrigation equipment has been distributed in the char area. Jute seeds and fertilizers have already been distributed.

Tuku said, we have adequate fertilizer stock. Maximum supervision is being done to ensure that farmers get fertilizer properly. No one will have any difficulty in getting fertilizer. He said that the government will take effective steps in the future to ensure overall cooperation of marginal farmers.

The program, chaired by Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, was addressed by Ziaur Rahman, Director of the Bangladesh Char Area Modern Agricultural Technology Extension Project (1st Amendment), Ashek Parvez, Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Extension Department, and agriculturist Noor-e-Alam Siddiqui, among others.
