Government working to make education system modern and practical: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman

Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that the government is working to make the country’s education system modern and practical. He said that initiatives have been taken to make the entire education system from primary to higher education timely and skill-based.

He said these things as the chief guest at the inauguration of the national workshop titled ‘Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence’ organized by the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday (12 May 2026) morning.

The Prime Minister said that the combined role of students and alumni is very important to advance the country’s higher education institutions in research, innovation and international competition. He said, “Students are the lifeblood of the university and alumni are its backbone.”

He also said that unemployment is increasing in the country due to lack of skill acquisition along with education. For this reason, work has begun to make the academic syllabus timely. The government wants to build an education system where students will get full opportunities to develop their talents and abilities.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said, “The government wants to meet the challenges of the future by nurturing talent, not trafficking talent.” He said that the need of the hour is to redesign the curriculum from primary to higher education. In addition, the government has also planned to provide ‘Innovation Grants’ at the college and university levels.

Regarding the international ranking of universities, the Prime Minister said that the position of Bangladeshi universities in achieving excellence in education, research and knowledge in the 21st century has not yet reached the expected heights. She said that research publications and innovation are given more importance in the ranking. She called on the country’s educationists to work more seriously in this regard.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the workshop at 10 am. The program organized under the chairmanship of Professor Mamun was attended by ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon, Prime Minister’s Education Advisor Mahdi Amin, Professor ABM Badruzzaman, Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury and Professor Md. Akhtar Hossain Khan, including academics and concerned individuals.
