Government waives off ‘agricultural loans’ to boost economy: Information Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said that the government has decided to waive off agricultural loans up to Tk 10,000 to boost the country’s agricultural economy and bring relief to rural areas.

He said that this step taken under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will directly benefit ordinary farmers and the national economy will prosper.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a view-exchange program organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Media Center at the Secretariat on Monday (March 2, 2026) afternoon.

The Information Minister said, ‘During the previous government, loan defaulters who looted crores of taka received state patronage, but the actual producing farmers were neglected.

He also said, ‘The current government has only taken charge for 14 days. In these few days, it has stood by the farmers. Farmers who have loans of up to 10,000 taka as of February 25 have had their principal and interest waived off. The Information Minister said that the incentives created by this waiver will play a far-reaching role in increasing our agricultural production. He also said that a pilot project to distribute ‘Farmer Smart Cards’ is being started very soon.
