Government to work with FAO for environmental protection and sustainable development

Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Abdul Awal Mintoo was met by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative in Bangladesh, Xiaokun Xi, at his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (March 31, 2026). Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Md. Raihan Kawsar, was present at the time.

During the meeting, the two sides had a fruitful exchange of views on various issues in the environment, forest and climate sectors. The minister highlighted the ministry’s various short, medium and long-term initiatives and future plans to prevent air, water and noise pollution in environmental protection and ensure environmentally and climate-resilient development.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on strengthening joint cooperation in sustainable agriculture, food security and combating climate change. The Minister said that the work that the Food and Agriculture Organization is doing in implementing projects with the Department of Environment and the Department of Forests as a collaborating partner under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in the light of various international conventions is commendable. His ministry is committed to working closely with this international organization.

FAO Bangladesh Representative Mr. Xiaokun Shi said that the Food and Agriculture Organization provides assistance in Bangladesh in areas such as hazardous waste removal and pollution control, climate change monitoring and support for the implementation of the Paris Agreement, strengthening pesticide management and chemical safety, climate resilient livelihoods and adaptation projects, policy planning and investment frameworks for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration. He expressed his intention to continue cooperating with the ministry in implementing projects through the Department of Environment and the Department of Forests.

During the meeting, both sides also discussed in detail the strengthening of mutual cooperation in combating climate change.
