Government is involving people in various initiatives for sustainable development: Environment Advisor

Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, said that the current government is taking various initiatives for sustainable development and is involving the people.

Calling for a new way of thinking about the country, she said that the government will give directions, but everyone will have to come forward on the path of change.

She said these things in her speech as the chief guest at the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) titled ‘De-Centralization and Environmental Welfare of the Capital: Towards a Sustainable Dhaka’ organized at the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Auditorium in Motijheel, Dhaka today (August 23, 2025).

Stating that the design of buildings and rooms should be done in an eco-friendly manner, she said that the rural environment is sustainable and the life of an ideal farmer is a reflection of sustainable development. Grass should be planted in the uncovered areas. Government initiatives alone are not enough, active involvement of the people is essential.

Special guest speaker at the event was Engineer Md. Riazul Islam, Chairman of RAJUK.

Keynote speaker was Architect Iqbal Habib, Managing Director of Bhaiyya Sthapatibrinda Limited. Taskin Ahmed, President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, chaired and moderated the FGD.

Among others, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Chief Executive Officer Md. Zahirul Islam, Director of the Department of Environment (DOE) Md. Ziaul Haque, Former Chief Architect of the Department of Architecture of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Kazi Golam Nasir, Chief Urban Planner of RAJUK Md. Ashraful Islam and Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, BUET Dr. Md. Shamsul Haque participated in the discussion.

The speakers in the discussion shared their views on decentralization, environmental protection and sustainable urban development in Dhaka. They felt that integrated planning and implementation of strong policies are essential to ensure the lasting welfare of the city.
