A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to develop and implement a suitable method for producing valuable products from fish waste. The agreement was signed at the university’s Academic Council meeting room on Sunday afternoon.
This agreement has been funded under UNDP’s ‘Local Government Initiative on Climate Change (LOGIC)’ project. GAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. GKM Mostafizur Rahman was present as the chief guest at the sustainable, innovative and community-based development agreement ceremony.
GAU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Mainul Haque, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Shafiul Islam Afrad and UNDP Bangladesh Assistant Resident Representative Sardar Asaduzzaman were present as special guests. In addition, UNDP Logic Project Project Coordinator A.K.M Azad Rahman, UNDP Operation Manager Md. Enamul Haque, along with the Deans, Directors, Department Heads of Fisheries Faculty and Registrar of various faculties of GKU were present at the event.
At the beginning of the event, Research Director Professor Dr. Md. Mosiul Islam presented a documentary on the introduction, innovations and successes of the university. Then, Principal Investigator (PI) of the contract project Professor Dr. S.M. Rafiquzzaman gave a potentially informative presentation on fish waste. He said that it is possible to prevent environmental pollution and play a positive role in the economy by recycling fish waste and producing collagen, gelatin and fish silage.
UNDP representative Sardar Asaduzzaman said, “Many of the research programs that UNDP undertakes to make sustainable development successful are ongoing at GKU. As a result, GKU can be called the DNA of sustainable development in this regard.” He further said, “UNDP will continue to strengthen the relationship with GACRU by expanding more projects in the future.”
The Vice Chancellor of GACRU expressed special gratitude to UNDP and said, “A groundbreaking chapter has been written through this agreement. GACRU’s Fisheries Faculty is working very spontaneously to enrich the country’s fisheries sector.”
