The funeral prayers of former Acting President and former Speaker of the National Assembly Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar were held at the South Plaza of the National Assembly on Sunday (July 12, 2026).
Prime Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Tarique Rahman, MP participated in the funeral prayers and paid tribute to the deceased.






At the beginning of the funeral prayers, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP read a brief biography of the late Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar.
Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, MP; Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Minister for Local Government Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, MP; Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP; Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Dr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman MP, Chief Whip of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Md. Nurul Islam Moni, MP and the son of the deceased, Member of Parliament Barrister Muhammad Nowshad Zamir MP, on behalf of the family.
Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram expressed gratitude to everyone present at the funeral. He said that Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar was a talented son of Bangladesh. Every member of the National Assembly is shocked and saddened by his demise. He was a gentle, decent person in his personal life and dedicated to the common people.
He also mentioned that former Speaker Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar was a trusted confidant of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. At the time, he expressed his condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased.
At the same time, the Chief Whip of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament and BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed his condolences, paid tributes and extended condolences to the family.
The President’s Military Secretary ASM Bahauddin, Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, MP, paid tribute to the late Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar on behalf of the President; the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, MP, on behalf of the BNP; Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP; the Chief Whip and other whips and Barrister Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan and officials on behalf of the Parliament Secretariat.
After paying homage, prayers and supplications were offered for the forgiveness of the departed soul and after the funeral, he was buried at the designated place in the National Parliament premises.
It is to be noted that the late Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar died on July 12, 2026 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital.
Cabinet members, members of parliament, political leaders, general public of Panchagarh-Tetulia, relatives of the deceased, officials and employees of the National Parliament Secretariat and various media personnel were present at the funeral ceremony.
