Four Ship Purchase Agreement Signed with China to Increase Shipping Capacity

Desk Report:

A framework agreement for the project titled ‘Procurement of New 4 Vessels Project’ has been signed to strengthen Bangladesh’s shipping capacity and expand foreign trade.

At the agreement signing ceremony held on Sunday (February 8), Md. Shahriar Quader Siddiqui, Honorable Secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance, and Yao Wen, Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka, signed the agreement on behalf of the Chinese government.

Ambassador Yao Wen said at the agreement signing ceremony that the implementation of this project will significantly increase Bangladesh’s shipping capacity, expand the scope of foreign trade, and strengthen the country’s maritime autonomy. He also said that the Chinese government will continue to pursue a good-neighborly and friendly policy with the people of Bangladesh and work to take Bangladesh-China economic and trade cooperation to new heights.

Ambassador Yao Wen expressed hope that the people of Bangladesh will directly benefit more through this cooperation.

It is worth noting that the ‘Procurement of New 4 Vessels Project’ is an intergovernmental cooperation project between Bangladesh and China, which will be implemented through a low-interest concessional loan provided by the Chinese government. Under the project, a total of four new ships will be built for Bangladesh—including two crude oil tankers and two bulk carriers.
