Football World Cup to be broadcast live on BTV for free: State Minister for Information

Desk Report:

The upcoming Football World Cup will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), said State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury. He said that this time BTV will be able to broadcast the World Cup matches almost free of cost as the agreement with FIFA was concluded through a transparent and cost-effective process.

He made this announcement at a press conference organized by the Directorate of Information at the Secretariat on Tuesday (June 9, 2026).

The State Minister for Information said that in the past, there were allegations of huge expenditure in acquiring the World Cup broadcasting rights. However, the current government has taken the initiative to acquire the broadcasting rights on a transparent basis to ensure maximum protection of the people’s money.

He said that after taking office, the government faced a complex situation regarding the World Cup broadcasting rights. An organization that bought the rights from FIFA initially demanded about 200 crore taka. But the government did not agree to that proposal and decided to enter into discussions directly with FIFA.

Yaser Khan Chowdhury said, “We have tried to secure the broadcasting rights in the best possible way without wasting public money. It has been possible to reach an acceptable solution through long discussions and negotiations.”

He also said that the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) and BFF President Tabith Awal played an important role in this process. Their involvement made the negotiations with FIFA easier and made it possible to secure the broadcasting rights at a low cost.

The State Minister expressed hope that crores of viewers in the country will be able to enjoy the World Cup football matches for free through BTV.
