A person must inform his family members within 12 hours of arrest. The government is amending the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) with such a provision.
The proposal to amend the CrPC was approved at the Advisory Council meeting at the Office of the Chief Advisor today (July 24, 2025) on Thursday (July 24, 2025). Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus presided over the meeting.
After the meeting, Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul gave this information at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
The Legal Advisor said, “From now on, any police member who goes to make an arrest must have proper identification. He must have a nameplate, ID card and must show these whenever asked.”
He said, “After arresting someone, the family must be informed by bringing them to the police station. Under no circumstances can more than 12 hours be taken. If the arrested person feels sick, medical arrangements must be made for him.’
The legal advisor said, ‘Why the arrest was made, who arrested him, who in the family was contacted after the arrest—all this information must be written down. In addition, the list of those arrested must be kept at the police headquarters.’
Noting that changes have been made to Section 54, the legal advisor said that if a crime is committed in front of the police, the police can arrest him. Or if there is a risk of escape, they can also arrest him. Online bail bonds and digital summons have been made.
Asif Nazrul said, if this law can be properly implemented, I believe it will play a groundbreaking role in stopping intentional arrests and harassment, or denials or disappearances after arrest.
Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam were present at the press conference.
