EU Ambassador meets Special Assistant to Bangladesh Chief Adviser to discuss elections, security, and migration

EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller met last week with Mr. Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of the interim government, in a discussion focusing on elections, security sector reform, and migration.

The meeting highlighted the EU’s ongoing support for Bangladesh during its transitional period, coinciding with the European Commission’s Global Alliance Ministerial meeting on Countering Migrant Smuggling held in Brussels. Ambassador Miller emphasized the EU’s commitment to preventing irregular migration while promoting safe and regular migration pathways. He welcomed Bangladesh’s recent criminalisation of migrant smuggling.

The two officials also discussed the role of the recently announced Police Commission and the overall security situation as the country prepares for the upcoming general elections. The EU is set to deploy an Election Observation Mission for the polls scheduled on 12 February.

In a lighter moment, both Mr. Miller and Mr. Chowdhury reminisced about their past experiences serving in the Western Balkans, reflecting on shared professional experiences in international diplomacy.
