Ensuring a peaceful, violence-free environment in Bangladesh elections is Russia’s priority: Russian Ambassador

Russian Ambassador Alexander Khozin gave a detailed statement on the upcoming elections in Bangladesh at a press briefing titled “Political Outcomes of 2025” on Monday (December 22, 2025). Ambassador Khozin said that Russia positively assessed the announcement of the election date and steps taken by the interim government and is hopeful that the elections will be held in a peaceful and violence-free environment. He also said that reducing political tensions is very important, which will help make the election results in Bangladesh acceptable and fair.

Responding to questions from journalists, Ambassador Khozin said that if international observers are interested in observing the elections in Bangladesh, they should formally invite them through the Election Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Russian side will send a delegation only after receiving an official invitation. Based on previous experience, members of the Russian Central Election Commission, social organizations and representatives of the State Duma will participate in the observation.

Ambassador Khozin assessed the upcoming elections in Bangladesh from the perspective of a potentially tolerant and friendly political environment. He said that Russia’s experience shows that no election or political change can be carried out without violence and losses. Therefore, it is very important to create a tolerant, aesthetic and violence-free electoral environment in Bangladesh.

Ambassador Khojin also commented on the India-Bangladesh border situation. He said that Russia is monitoring the tension between the two countries and hopes that the two sides will take steps to resolve the issue quickly. India and Russia’s cooperation was important during Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, and reducing the current tension on this historical basis will be beneficial for both countries.

Ambassador Khojin further mentioned in the press briefing that Russia is interested in the electoral process in Bangladesh and is ready to help the people of Bangladesh ensure a peaceful, fruitful and safe election. He said, “Our main priority is to keep the election free of violence and ensure a safe and acceptable process for the people of Bangladesh.”
