The Election Commission (EC) has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The Commission’s message of condolence was sent to the media from the Public Relations Division of the Election Commission on Tuesday (December 30).
The EC said that Begum Khaleda Zia was an influential and important figure in the democratic politics of Bangladesh. She took office as the country’s first female Prime Minister after the restoration of parliamentary democracy in 1991 and was elected Prime Minister for two more terms in 1996 and 2001. In her political life, she played a significant role in multi-party democracy, constitutional governance and political participation. She was also active in parliamentary politics for a long time as an opposition leader and played an uncompromising role in the restoration of democracy.
The organization further said that her political role in the development of the electoral process and democratic institutions will be remembered in the history of Bangladesh. The Election Commission prays for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expresses its deepest condolences to her bereaved family, relatives and colleagues.
